I'm currently in the middle of a graduate class in the anthropology of religion. We were talking about converts to evangelical religions (my professor works with Maya populations in southern Mexico) and the point about disenfranchised and powerless people (poor families, women) is the generally accepted answer for why people join.

Sadly, a lot of these women are starved for ANY male notice. To have Brother Kind N. Studly give you his full attention for a few minutes, one on one, is heaven on earth. Especially when they are going home to Mr. Fartbelch N. Complain.

lots of these women are looking for religion to solve their problems with their husbands/families - alcoholism, abuse, etc. What they don't know isthat sometimes the new religion makes things worse.
asleif, I think you hit on the main reason there. At least for those being seduced into the WTS ranks.

long & short, had a temp secretary who is a jw.
had problems, eventually got rid of her, but she still works at the firm.
My fear is she will think this is a persecution thing. Also, I hope HR handles it right and does not name names otherwise all hell is going to break lose. She and I went toe to toe when she was calling after me right after the memorial last year to ask me if I went, all the while I have a client I am walking back to the board room. It was horrible, that is how it all began. I do think she is more over the top then most JWs and she has a chip on her shoulder on top of it. So besides the fact that she is a crazy JW, she is a mean and nasty crazy JW. Let's hope this is the end of her!

the seemingly benign dominance by "good" men is very appealing to many women and they feel safe and cared for. I know that 90% of those who approached elders with personal issues were females.
LOL! Yeah, Gregor. Just until they're on the receiving end of that "caring" dominance in perhaps a JC, headed by Brother "I'm-gonna-get-you-suckah" or just casual advice from one of the elders whose name should be Richard Cranium.
my almost 17 year old daughter left to stay with her dad last thursday.
this is the second time she has left due to my strict rules, like 10p school day curfue, get to school on time, keep your grades above a c. she has not kept to my rules, so as a consequence i told her this last wednesday night she has lost driving priviledges of the car i gave her on her 16th birthday.
she said she was leaving to live with her dad.
If I do not make get the daughter back in school I will have to go to jail.
JB, in this case, you should follow your attorney's advice and if your ex refuses to accept responsibility, then speak (perhaps you should do this before speaking with the ex) with the truant officer and tell them the situation, then keep the school authorities in the loop on the situation. It's CYA time, legally speaking.

i ask this because i just got a pm from an angry poster over my posting the following link and info on an antibiotic that bbc carried the news in regard to and was being researched by camcer research uk: http://www.rense.com/general58/anti.htm.
also, i noticed that mary replied with this link to yet another site that showed a study at a university in canada had turned up another cheap, safe drug that kills cancer cells: http://www.wanderings.net/notebook/main/cheapsafedrugkillsmostcancers.
Exactly, Hal9000. I sure do know what you mean about tracking past docs that are only interested in dealing with the symptoms or body parts, instead of the illness or the cause or especially the person as a whole.
Yes, I agree about offering the info. The person involved can decide for themselves whether to use the info or not. It would not be ethical to promote something as the only way to go.

Oh, Nina! I know what you mean, chere! I don't, nor have I ever had to take lexapro, but the doc told me I should adjust to my meds for the bipolar disorder within about a month. I took it for TWO MONTHs and was STILL yawning constantly, sleeping most of the time and trying to eat everything that wasn't nailed down. I quit taking it because I figure I'm not around anyone except CP and my "up" cycles enable me to get a lot done and I don't have to report to anyone, and if I sleep a lot during my "down" times, it doesn't matter.

lately i've been listening more and more to classical music.
went to several concerts, opera and a ballet..
just wondering if anyone else loves classical music or maybe modern incarnations like styles of vanessa mae, maxim mrvica, bond, amici and alike.
I learned to appreciate opera when my high school choir teacher sang for us. She was Louella Scarpa, formerly with the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.
